Welcoming a newborn into the world is a joyful and transformative experience for any family. And because every baby is unique, your experience may be completely different from your best friend’s, coworker’s, or your mom’s.
However, while they can’t predict every behavior, pediatricians can provide a range of expectations that reflect your baby’s health, growth, and development.
Our team at Southfield Pediatrics in Bingham Farms and Novi, Michigan, is committed to providing your child with the best opportunity possible for good health from birth through adolescence, starting with newborn care.
As partners in your child’s health, we’re always happy to provide information that might ease the stress and confusion of parenting, giving you more time for the joys of childhood.
Six topics to discuss during routine newborn visits
Like other phases of childhood, the newborn era moves quickly, typically referring to infants from birth through 2-3 months old.
We recommend that newborn well-child checks occur within the first week (3-5 days old), at 1 month, and 2 months. After that, we space them a little further apart according to American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, totaling six routine visits within the first year.
We’re happy to answer all your questions during these visits, but here are six topics that usually fuel our discussions:
1. Nutrition and feeding practices
Adequate nutrition is fundamental for a newborn’s growth and development. Along with a thorough physical exam, including measuring the baby’s weight and length, your Southfield Pediatrics provider discusses breastfeeding techniques, addressing any challenges you’re experiencing.
For families opting for formula feeding, expect guidance on proper formula preparation and feeding schedules. Monitoring the baby’s weight gain and feeding patterns helps ensure they’re receiving sufficient nourishment.
2. Developmental milestones
Babies grow and develop rapidly during their first year of life, and developmental milestones are part of the discussion during newborn visits. This may include motor skills (movement), social interactions, and age-appropriate language (i.e., babbling).
For instance, at the first newborn visit, usually within the first week of birth, milestones may include moving both arms and legs equally well, lifting the head slightly when on the tummy, and tracking (focusing on) a nearby object.
Notably, reaching milestones isn’t an exact science. Instead, pediatricians consider a range of age-related development. Your newborn may develop more quickly in some ways than others or more slowly. Assessing these milestones helps us identify potential delays early on, allowing for timely interventions and support.
3. Sleeping habits and safety
Establishing healthy sleeping habits is crucial for both your baby’s well-being and your sanity. Discussions during newborn visits often cover safe sleep practices, such as placing your baby on their back to sleep and creating a conducive sleep environment free from hazards like loose bedding or soft toys.
We also address common sleep challenges, such as frequent waking or difficulty settling, hoping to provide reassurance and guidance for exhausted parents.
4. Immunizations and vaccination schedule
Immunizations are vital for protecting newborns from potentially life-threatening diseases. Our Southfield Pediatrics team provides education about the recommended vaccination schedule, including the importance of timely immunizations to build immunity against various illnesses.
We’re happy to address your concerns about vaccines, provide tips for encouraging and consoling children before and after their “shot” visit, and discuss the many benefits of routine vaccinations.
5. Postpartum care for mothers
While much attention is focused on the newborn, our team considers it essential to ensure Mom’s well-being. Thus, routine newborn visits include discussions about your postpartum recovery and strategies for self-care.
By addressing topics such as postpartum depression, breastfeeding challenges, and other concerns, we hope to empower mothers (and fathers) to prioritize their health and seek support when needed.
6. Injury prevention
Newborns are vulnerable to accidents and injuries, making safety education paramount. Topics may include safe handling techniques, babyproofing the home environment, and using age-appropriate car seats and restraints during travel.
